Belgium produced a clinical second-half comeback to claim a 2-1 victory over Denmark in Copenhagen. In their first game since Eriksen's collapse, the Danes led early through Yussuf Poulsen but came unstuck in the second period with goals from Thorgan Hazard and the majestic Kevin De Bruyne.
None in attendance needed reminding of the traumatic scenes just five days prior. The Belgians appeared deferential, expecting a pedestrian start before the scheduled break. But in the second minute, Poulsen provided a brilliant finish after Denayer carelessly surrendered possession.
Courtois was forced into action minutes later, saving bravely from Maehle and Wass. Then, in the tenth, all 22 players, the benches, thousands in the stands, and undoubtedly the millions watching at home stood to applaud the Danish talisman in hospital just 400 yards away. Thankfully, alive and well.
The Belgians emerged with some overdue control but struggled to open up the stubborn Danish block. This pattern continued into the second period, Denmark remained a threat, but De Bruyne's introduction at the break completely changed the game. Just before the hour, from Lukaku's run, De Bruyne, so composed, feigned to shoot before sliding a pass across to Hazard for a tap-in.
The Danes dropped deeper and were punished again with 20 mins to go. Following a classy passing interchange, De Bruyne lashed a superb left-footed strike past Schmeichel to seal the comeback victory. The hosts pushed gallantly in the final stages, Braithwaite came close on three occasions, but the defeat leaves them with much to do in their final outing against Russia on Monday.
